Balickera Transfer Tunnel

Image

Description

Abyss Solutions conducted a remote above water inspection of the 1200m long Balickera Bulk Water Transfer Tunnel to determine the locations of endangered microbat colonies and defects present on the tunnel crown.
A special Tunnel Inspection Platform (TIP) was built to include high fidelity infrared light cameras & illumination in order to avoid disturbing the bats.

Inspection Overview

Abyss Solutions designed and built a TIP to reduce its impact on the bat colonies and overcome the dense underwater vegetation and obstacles within the tunnel.
The TIP consisted of a needle shaped floating platform with an array of infrared lights and cameras. The TIP was drawn through the tunnel using a set of lines attached to its ends.

Outcome

Abyss Solutions has successfully completed the above water inspection of the Balickera Bulk Water Transfer Tunnel using its TIP without disturbing the resident bats. The imagery collected was used to locate bat colonies and structural defects ranging from deteriorated rock anchor bolts and ruptures on the tunnel crown.
