SAN DIEGO WATER- AUTOMATIC FAULT CLASSIFICATION

Abyss performed a pilot project with San Diego County Water Authority to showcase Abyss’s proprietary fault detection algorithms.

This project required a diverse range of skills from Abyss’ team of experts. The asset monitored was San Diego Water’s drinking water pipe, of which they had collected data that using an ROV. However, the data was not of sufficiently good quality to make asset management decisions. Abyss Solutions used the latest technology in image enhancement to increase the quality of the images in minimal time. Furthermore, one of the biggest challenges in this project was the data analysis as Abyss’s team had to identify the difference between corrosion and Calcium Carbonate using automatic fault detection algorithms.

Moreover, extensive hours of video analysis were avoided due to the use of machine learning algorithms to detect faults automatically, enabling faster and precise analysis. This method proved the potential to avoid unnecessary pipe dewatering, and faster and more precise data analysis, making inspections more cost-effective and accurate.
