The Sky's No Limit For Aussie Autonomous Systems Company Abyss - 21 November 2022

Abyss Solutions reveals ambitious growth plan, builds tech for space-borne robotic inspection

Sydney, Australia, 22 November 2022 – Award-winning Australian autonomous systems company Abyss Solutions is defying the tech downturn as it continues to scale and expand into new markets with strong triple-digit growth.

Founded by four scientists and engineers from The University of Sydney in 2014, Abyss Solutions uses state-of-the-art machine learning and robotics to deliver data-driven engineering assessments for critical infrastructure across land, sea, air, and now space.

Over the past four years, Abyss has consistently achieved +100% year-on-year growth, expanding into energy, agriculture, water infrastructure, and most recently space, where the arduously manual inspection, assessment, and management of infrastructure is a costly and often dangerous task.

Today, some of the world’s biggest companies trust and rely on Abyss’ technology to significantly reduce operational risk, improve safety and minimize the negative impact critical infrastructure can have on the environment.

Despite challenging economic conditions, the young company is profitable, and its strong tripledigit growth is expected to continue over the next three years as it scales with continued support from leading venture capital firm AirTree, which has doubled down through a $15m coinvestment with one of its LPs, Australian Retirement Trust.

Nasir Ahsan, CEO and Co-Founder, of Abyss Solutions said the next few years mark an exciting chapter for the business which continues to break into new frontiers, solve new problems and deliver world firsts.

“Since founding Abyss in 2014, our journey has taken us to some of the world’s most complex and challenging environments. We’ve achieved incredible growth and are proud to have mitigated billions of dollars of risk across our clients’ assets by delivering inspections at scale, at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods.

“This success is a testament to our team’s ability to continuously innovate and develop pioneering technology that solves some of the world’s most pressing challenges. We are on a voyage of constant discovery and this latest round of funding will allow us to scale, expand into new markets and continue to build technology that will not only keep humans out of dangerous situations but also reduce the strain critical infrastructure can have on the planet,” he said.

Elicia McDonald, AirTree Partner and Non-Executive Director for Abyss Solutions said Abyss is well positioned to capture the large global infrastructure management market.

“As a young, capital-efficient company Nasir and the team continue to impress and exceed expectations. They’re gaining strong traction in new verticals like agriculture, water infrastructure, and space, and currently, convert 100% of clients who pilot the technology.

“We’re proud to support Abyss in creating safer and more sustainable engineering assessments and we’re excited by the potential its technology holds for new and emerging industries, especially considering the Australian Government has announced its throwing more support behind critical technologies like robotics, AI and quantum in a bid to improve economic complexity,” she added.

Australian Retirement Trust’s Head of Private Corporate Assets, Elizabeth Kumaru, said it’s an exciting opportunity for the superannuation fund and its members.

“As one of Australia’s largest super funds, Australian Retirement Trust is keen to continue supporting Australia’s vibrant technology ecosystem by investing in innovative companies like Abyss.

“We believe this investment represents an opportunity to support the delivery of safer, datadriven engineering assessments for critical infrastructure while also contributing to improved retirement outcomes for our two million members.”

Our Co-Founders

 DR. NASIR AHSAN – CO-FOUNDER

As a computer scientist with a passion for robotics, Dr. Nasir Ahsan has always been intrigued by how machine learning can address the fundamental perceptual and control challenges involved in building intelligent robots. He was fortunate to be taught by some of the world’s leading experts in artificial intelligence at the Australian Center for Field Robotics and UNSW. He has also lectured at NUST in Pakistan, where he managed several projects including developing an Autonomous Air Vehicle.

Over the last 18 years, Nasir worked in a variety of different industries such as molecular biology, marine ecology, mining, land management, agriculture, and deep-water exploration. In fact, one of his proudest moments was being the first Pakistani to set sail on the Nautilus EV (with Bob Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic) exploring the depths of the Caribbean and Pacific oceans. This was a life-changing experience that helped Nasir to further understand the Earth’s processes and the possibilities for life to thrive in the ocean’s most extreme environment.

Now, as co-founder and CEO of Abyss Solutions, he leads a team of over 120 people at the forefront of autonomous inspection – providing the intelligence businesses need to inspect assets regularly and reliably at scale with world-leading speed and accuracy. Nasir and the entire Abyss team have committed to creating a safer and more sustainable future through the unlimited potential of autonomous robotics – enabling businesses to protect the resources they have whilst finding new ones – on this planet and others.

HINA AHSAN CO-FOUNDER

As a young girl, Hina Ahsan grew up in Pakistan imagining herself working in a professional business setting, but never in her wildest dreams did she think she would be the co-founder of a multi-million dollar business in an industry dominated by men.

After immigrating to Australia when she was 26, Hina earned a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Agriculture, Peshawar. After graduation, she became the Program Officer at Preston University in Pakistan and was also a lecturer at Khyber College of Commerce and Management where she taught Economics to undergraduate students. She then went on to work at the MAA Australia where she managed humanitarian relief, emergency, and developmental projects that have distributed over A$1.5 million.

Hina would soon pivot to entrepreneurial endeavours with the hope to change the landscape of exploration through robotics and machine learning. “Abyss Solutions has become the trusted leader in autonomous inspections at scale, and our team isn’t stopping there. Every day we push the boundaries of what’s possible when it comes to offering solutions that reduce the strain on our ecosystems and keep humans out of dangerous situations,” noted Hina.

It’s not all about business for Hina. Through her work with MMA, her eyes were opened to the great need for basic necessities in developing countries. She used her past humanitarian efforts to pave the way for Abyss to provide continuous support to underprivileged areas around the world. She has also found a passion to help women overcome gender bias and take roles in male-dominated industries.

ABRAHAM KAZZAZ CO-FOUNDER

Abraham Kazzaz’s drive to develop and sell new technologies can be traced back to his pre-professional days. Whether he was pulling apart toys as a child, to see how they worked, or building and selling custom gaming PCs in high school, he’s been putting new and better solutions in people’s hands for a long time.

Growing up in Sydney, Australia it was natural that he would attend the University of Sydney. He studied there for 8 years earning degrees in civil and structural engineering as well as a business degree in management. Abraham has had the opportunity to work on infrastructures all over the world from the Scottish highlands to the Mojave desert and to the depths of the Gulf of Mexico. While pursuing a Ph.D., he decided his expertise could be helpful toward a different, but greater cause – preserving the world’s most precious resources through technology. In turn, he co-founded Abyss Solutions.

“Abyss is on the brink of filtering our technology into normally unattended offshore facilities, farms, dams, ports, bridges, and the like with aerial drones, crawler robots, and autonomous surface and underwater robots. These robots move around looking for defects like corrosion and cracks. In the future, they will be able to detect anomalies like spills, leaks, weeds, or pests as well and be able to intervene and correct these hazards,” said Abraham. Since first founding Abyss, Abraham has realized the endless possibilities to change the world for the better. He is constantly pushing Abyss to be on the cutting edge of developing autonomous systems of the future.

MASOOD NAQSHBANDI CO-FOUNDER

Masood Naqshbandi was born in Afghanistan with a natural curiosity for scientific research. From a very young age, he was conducting experiments in his family’s kitchen. This curiosity would carry into his teenage years when his family immigrated to Sydney, Australia, and Masood would soon be given the opportunity to attend the prestigious University of Sydney. Masood not only earned a Master’s Degree in Materials Chemistry and Photonics in 2013, but the university also offered him a position as a Research Scientist to further advance his expertise.

His research life took him to different parts of the world where he collaborated and published work with groups at the University of Technology of Parana in Brazil, the University of Osaka in Japan, and Colleagues in Paris. It was during his extensive years of research that his entrepreneurship spirit was awakened. The evolution was rooted in how the future of innovative science technology and automation can benefit every living being in the world. Masood co-founded Abyss Solutions with the hope that the company will become an innovation powerhouse that consistently helps solve some of the world’s most challenging obstacles.
